Technique: ceramic mosaic

Dimensions: approx. 300 cm × 250 cm

Object: The mosaic is a ceramic composition in shades of ochre, Venetian pink, ivory and burnt sienna. The composition is abstract, non-geometric, and references Art Informel. The mosaic was designed as an integral part of the NBP building’s architectural design (currently a branch of the PZU). The author made it together with a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, the distinguished artist Andrzej Trzaska.

Place: The former NBP building was built in the 1970s. In the early 21st century, the building underwent a thorough renovation, during which artists associated with the Academy of Fine Arts helped save the mosaic.

Information about the author: Jerzy Zabłocki (born 9 June 1927 in Łódź, died 20 January 1993 in Ankara, Turkey). Between 1948 and 1954, he studied painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts (PWSSP) in Gdańsk, where he presented his diploma in the studio of Prof. Juliusz Studnicki. He also worked on the reconstruction of Gdańsk tenement houses. In 1953, he started working at his alma mater and continued until 1990. He was a pedagogue, painter, graphic artist, designer, author of numerous public space exhibitions and projects: the interior design and art in the Ship Institute of the Gdańsk University of Technology (with co-author Bolesław Petrycki), the design and creation of the curtain for the NOT entertainment hall in Gdańsk, interior designs for the “Stefan Batory” ship, stage designs for the Drama Theatre in Gdynia.

Andrzej Trzaska – born in 1935, d. in 2019. After graduating in painting at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wrocław, he continued his studies at the Gdańsk university. At the same time, together with a group of students, prof. Hanna Żuławska worked in her famous studio in Kadyny and it was the Kadyny experience that most influenced the shape of Trzaska’s future ceramics. He made his debut at the collective exhibition “Kadyny” at the Kordegarda gallery in Warsaw in 1957. The success of the exhibition and the great potential of the studio were not used, however. In Kadyny, work on designing ceramics for industrial production began, but unfortunately they ended in failure. Trzaska worked individually with Cepelia, in the early 1960s he joined the Włocławek Cooperative “Przyjaźń”. The main profile of the plant’s activity before Trzaska took over the artistic management was the production of pots, within a few years he introduced many patterns of decorative and functional ceramics: platters, candlesticks, vases, etc. and Trzaska’s individual style. Author of mosaics and ceramic decorations in the space of Gdańsk.
