Technique: bronze sculpture on a granite plinth

Dimensions: 163 cm × 78 cm × 70 cm (plinth), max. 230 cm × 85 cm × 70 cm (figure), 400 cm (entire statue)

Object: The monument commemorates the blessed Bronisław Komorowski, a Polish clergyman working for the Polish diaspora and Polishness in the Free City of Danzig in the 1920s and 30s. Komorowski was the parish priest of Saint Stanislaus Church in Gdańsk, a parish that gathered the Polish community in Gdańsk. Between 1933 and 1934, he was the only Polish councillor in the City Council. He was murdered on 22 March 1940 in the Stutthof concentration camp and beatified by Pope John Paul II on 13 June 1999.

The statue depicts the standing priest in a cassock and biretta, with his hands folded behind his back. The figure, cast in bronze, was placed on a red granite plinth. The priest is presented in a realistic, though rather synthetic manner. The plinth features a carved cameo inscription reading: “Blessed priest Bronisław Komorowski 1889–1940”. The monument is enclosed by a metal fence in the shape of a hexagon. In the vicinity is a commemorative plaque informing about the priest’s fate.

Place: The monument is situated on one of the main Gdańsk arteries, Legionów Street, along which runs a tramway line, and in the vicinity of a square formed in the 18th century out of the intersection of former routes connecting Strzyża, Kuźniczki and Zaspa with Brunów, Wrzeszcz and Gdańsk. In 1925 it was named Max-Halbe-Platz (on the occasion of the German playwright and novelist receiving honorary citizenship of Danzig). After the war, in 1945, the square was named after priest Bronisław Komorowski.

Information about the author: Jan Waldemar Kolasiński is sculptor who lives and works in Podkowa Leśna.
