Object: The steel fountain is located in a small square between the blocks of flats in the Wiszące Ogrody (Hanging Gardens) estate. It consists of three vertical steel pipes of varying heights, crafted with finishes that include forging, hammering, and casting. They culminate in shapes resembling flower chalices, such as anthurium, datura, peace lily, or pitcher plants. On one of the pipes, a stylised bird with outstretched wings perches on the edge of a chalice. The entire fountain is handcrafted from black galvanised steel, which was then powder-coated. The elements are arranged in a circular, low base built from small paving stones and filled with gravel. The water jets are hidden within each of the pipes. The fountain’s minimalist design harmonises with the modern aesthetic of the surrounding residential architecture, achieving the artist’s deliberate goal of complementing the estate’s environment.

Location: The Wiszące Ogrody residential estate is part of the Jasień district, bordering other Gdańsk districts such as Matarnia, Brętowo, and Piecki-Migowo, as well as the rural municipality of Kolbudy. The development phases of the estate were completed between 2009 and 2023 by the Hossa Investment Group. This modern multi-family housing complex includes commercial spaces and a small square with a fountain. The Jasień district was incorporated into Gdańsk’s administrative boundaries in 1973, with most of its development occurring in the 1990s. It was officially designated as an independent district in 2010. Historically, the area was rural and, earlier, part of a manorial estate with various names over the centuries (Ninechow, Nynkow, Nenkau). The current name, Jasień, given in 1954, references the rule of Polish nobleman Feliks Łebiński from the Jasieński family, who acquired the area in the late 18th century and established an impressive manor-park complex, parts of which still exist today.

Information about the author: Adam Stachowicz (b. 1970 in Gdańsk) is a sculptor, author of sculptural portraits, and artistic blacksmith. He graduated from the Faculty of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and, since 1998, has operated his own studio in Przywidz, in the Kashubian region. For many years, he collaborated with architect Joanna Bober to create architectural, wall, and stucco decorations, as well as artistic blacksmithing projects. Since 2007, he has chaired the Polish Association of Artistic Blacksmiths, promoting blacksmithing both as a craft and as a form of artistic expression. In 2006, Stachowicz became the first Polish artist featured in the prestigious Metall Design International publication. His work was again highlighted in this yearbook in 2019. Since 2018, he has co-organised blacksmithing demonstrations at the Kuźnia Wodna (Water Forge) in Oliwa. Stachowicz’s works in Gdańsk include sculptures in the Madison Gallery shopping centre (The Violinist) and pieces on various Hossa Group developments. His art has also been showcased at international outdoor sculpture workshops and exhibitions in Poland, Germany, Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands.
