Object: The tall ground-floor windows feature decorative panels with mosaics by Cecylia Dobrowolska, depicting a ship under attack by sea creatures and its crew defending it, as well as another ship whose crew is catching giant, exotic fish with massive nets. Above the first-floor windows and the transom of the portal are ceramic tondi featuring sailing ships, resembling those depicted in the mosaic scenes created by Maria Alkiewicz and Cecylia Dobrowolska.
Location: The painted decoration was created as part of an effort by artists – primarily lecturers and students of the State School of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (PWSSP) – to contribute to the reconstruction of Główne Miasto, which had been heavily damaged in 1945. Długa Street and Długi Targ were among the first areas to be rebuilt. The most valuable tenements were faithfully reconstructed, while others were given stylistic adaptations inspired, more or less, by their pre-1945 appearance. These restored façades were intended to serve as a backdrop for the reconstructed historical monuments.
Information about the author: Maria Alkiewicz (b. 1924 in Nowy Targ, d. 1999 in Gdynia) graduated from the State School of Fine Arts (PWSSP) in Gdańsk in 1954. At her alma mater, she worked in the Ceramics Studio. She was a member of the ‘Kadyny group’ founded by Hanna Żuławska. As part of Żuławska’s team, she participated in the reconstruction of Gdańsk’s Główne Miasto and the construction of the Marszałkowska Residential District in Warsaw. She passed away in Gdynia in 1999.
Cecylia Dobrowolska was a visual artist specialising in ceramics, graduate of the PWSSP in Gdańsk. She was a member of the ‘Kadyny group’ founded by Hanna Żuławska. As part of Żuławska’s team, she participated in the reconstruction of Gdańsk’s Główne Miasto and the construction of the Marszałkowska Residential District in Warsaw.
