On the front face of the pedestal, the following inscription is engraved: \u2018Alf Liczma\u0144ski. Martyred on 20 March 1940\u2019, with a Scout cross and the words \u2018\u2026Stone for the rampart \u2026\u2019 below. On the side of the pedestal, there is a second inscription that reads: \u2018We pledge loyalty to you, Poland, in service to the nation and peace\u2019. The artist\u2019s signature, \u2018W. To\u0142kin\u2019, is inscribed on the eastern edge of the bust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Location:<\/strong> The monument is located to the left of the main entrance to Primary School No. 65 named after Alf Liczma\u0144ski, who became the school\u2019s patron on 20 May 1965. Alfons Liczma\u0144ski, a native of Gda\u0144sk and a Scout activist, was arrested in 1940 after the outbreak of World War II and executed in Graniczna Wie\u015b, a subcamp of the Stutthof concentration camp.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Information about the author:<\/strong> Wiktor To\u0142kin (b. 21 February 1922 in To\u0142kacze \u2013 d. 7 May 2013 in Gda\u0144sk) was a Polish sculptor and architect. During World War II, he was a member of the Home Army (<em>Armia Krajowa<\/em>). Arrested by the Gestapo, he was imprisoned in the Auschwitz concentration camp from 17 November 1942 to February 1944. He was released through family efforts, later fought in the Warsaw Uprising, and was subsequently held in a POW camp in Sandbostel near Bremen. To\u0142kin graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Gda\u0144sk University of Technology (1946\u20131952) and the Faculty of Sculpture at the State School of Fine Arts in Gda\u0144sk (1947\u20131954). From 1952, he worked as an architect at design offices, but after 1963, he dedicated himself to artistic endeavours. Until the late 1990s, he operated a sculpture workshop in Gda\u0144sk\u2019s G\u0142\u00f3wne Miasto, at 3 Mariacka Street. To\u0142kin is regarded as a leading figure in Polish monumental sculpture of the second half of the 20th century, alongside Xawery Dunikowski and Franciszek Dusze\u0144ko. He specialised in monuments related to World War II:\u00a0<em> Marriage of Poland to the Sea<\/em> (Ko\u0142obrzeg, 1963);\u00a0<em>To the People of the Sea <\/em>(Gdynia, 1965);\u00a0monument to Alf Liczma\u0144ski (Gda\u0144sk, 1965);\u00a0<em>Struggle and Martyrdom of Stutthof<\/em> (Sztutowo, 1968);\u00a0<em>Fighters of the Resistance Movement<\/em> (Z\u0142ota G\u00f3ra near Brodnica G\u00f3rna, 1968);\u00a0<em>Struggle and Martyrdom with the Mausoleum Pantheon<\/em> in the former Majdanek camp (Lublin, 1969);\u00a0<em>Polish Armed Forces Monument<\/em> (P\u0142ock, 1978); monument to Janek Krasicki (Gda\u0144sk, 1968). Most of these works are monumental compositions integrated into broader architectural designs.
