{"id":4158,"date":"2023-03-28T23:33:27","date_gmt":"2023-03-28T21:33:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gaps.gda.pl\/?post_type=object&#038;p=4158"},"modified":"2023-03-28T23:33:27","modified_gmt":"2023-03-28T21:33:27","slug":"monument-to-anna-walentynowicz","status":"publish","type":"object","link":"https:\/\/gaps.gda.pl\/en\/obiekt\/monument-to-anna-walentynowicz\/","title":{"rendered":"Monument to Anna Walentynowicz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Technique: <\/strong>bronze sculpture on a granite plinth<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dimensions:<\/strong> 81 cm \u00d7 80 cm \u00d7 64.5 cm (plinth), max. 180 cm \u00d7 55 cm \u00d7 49 cm (figure)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Object:<\/strong> <em>The bronze figure is a realistic depiction of the woman, who stands in a pensive pose. <\/em><em>The granite plinth features a carved intaglio inscription reading: <\/em><em>\u201cAnna Walentynowicz 1929\u20132010\u201d and below: <\/em>\u201cThere is no freedom without Solidarity\u201d. <em>The monument was unveiled on the 86<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the activist\u2019s birthday on the initiative of the \u201cGodno\u015b\u0107\u201d (Dignity) association uniting former political prisoners of the People\u2019s Republic of Poland. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The monument commemorates Anna Walentynowicz, activist and oppositionist in the People\u2019s Republic of Poland. Walentynowicz worked at the Lenin Shipyard in Gda\u0144sk since 1950 as a welder and gantry crane operator. On 8 August 1980 she was dismissed on disciplinary grounds for her oppositionist activity, just five months before she was due to retire. Her dismissal sparked a wave of strikes at the Gda\u0144sk Shipyard, with one of the demands formulated by the protesting workers being Walentynowicz\u2019s return to work. She belonged to the Interfactory Strike Committee and Presidium of the Interfactory Founding Committee of the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union \u201cSolidarity\u201d. <em>In the 1980s, she was interned and arrested several times; in 1983, she was sentenced to 18 months in prison for organizing a strike. <\/em><em>In 2006, she was decorated with the Order of the White Eagle. <\/em><em>She died tragically in the Smole\u0144sk plane crash on 10 April 2010.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The decision to create a monument in this place raised controversy among local residents, who wanted the area to serve typically recreational purposes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Place:<\/strong> The sculpture is located on a small park square with several benches, next to Tri-City\u2019s main artery, Grunwaldzka Street, in the vicinity of the Artists\u2019 Colony \u2013 a gallery and cultural hub.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Information about the author:<\/strong> Stanis\u0142aw Milewski is an artist and sculptor.
