The equestrian statue of the king is set on a stone plinth with sculptural decorations and inscription plaques. The whole monument is placed on a one-step stone base standing on a four-step stone podium. The figure of John III Sobieski is depicted in the Polish nobleman’s costume. The king is wearing a żupan robe and a kontusz with the sleeves thrown back, sirwal trousers and soft boots with folded uppers. On his head is a cap with a fur trim and a feather attached to the cap with a brooch. The king holds the reins in his left hand and raises his mace in his right. His horse is about to jump over fragments of ramparts, a broken wheel, a bunchuk and a cannon barrel. On the northern side of the statue’s base is an inscription reading: “Tadeusz Barącz Sc. 1897”.

The high stone plinth was built on a rectangular plan with semi-circular closures on its shorter sides. In the upper part, the plinth is enclosed by a cornice with an elaborate profile, as well as a frieze with relief decoration depicting cartouches alternating with crowns supported on decorative displays of weapons and protective arms. There are inscription plaques on the central part of the plinth. The inscription on the south side reads: “To King John III, city of Lviv, MDCCCXCVIII”. On the northern side, there is a plaque with the names of 20 battlefields in which John III Sobieski commanded Polish troops. The body of the plinth is finished with a cornice in its lower part.

The monument to King John III Sobieski was founded by the city of Lviv. King Sobieski symbolized the successful, efficiently ruled, independent Polish state. Additional reasons for commemorating Sobieski in this particular city included the fact he was born in Olesko, in the vicinity of Lviv, which is also where his estates were located. After the end of World War II, Lviv found itself within the boundaries of the USSR, whose authorities in 1950 handed the monument over to their Polish counterparts. The statue was initially transferred from Lviv to Wilanów, where it remained for 16 years. Then it was transported to Gdansk and placed on Targ Drzewny, replacing a German monument commemorating soldiers killed in wars preceding the unification of Germany.

The original plaque with the text “To King John III, the City of Lviv” was hidden and not mounted until 1989. However, the original bronze cartouche plaques were not mounted, and are probably concreted in boxes inside the plinth.

The monument was renovated between 1995 and 1997. Among other things, the missing royal coat of arms and plaques were reconstructed (the latter were made of sandstone by Czesław Gajda). The plaque reading “To King John III – the City of Lviv MDCCCXCVIII” was also reconstructed: unveiled from scaffolding during the summer holiday on 25 June 1995, it was stolen on 30 July of the same year. The area around the monument was restored in 1998 according to a modified project by Hanna Klementowska (the original one envisaged thinning out the trees for better exposure). In 1999–2000 the monument was illuminated. It was once again renovated in June 2019. The figure of King John III Sobieski was modelled on the Lviv entrepreneur and horse riding instructor Marian Stipal, the great-grandfather of Gdańsk photographer Leszek Pękalski.

Place: central part of Targ Drzewny (Wood Market) on the east-west axis. Until the post-war reconstruction of the city, the urban interior of Targ Drzewny was clearly formed by the façades of tenements standing along the current roadways of the square’s roundabout. The present square was created as a result of the post-war idea to uncover the old city walls and replace the tenement houses that used to cover them with squares – like a green belt around the once fortified Main Town. This “green belt”, or Planty, does indeed exist: in its centre is the Targ Węglowy (Coal Market), and the green squares stretch on both its sides, reaching to the wharves of Motława, which close the circle of the city around its former fortifications.

The statue of King John III Sobieski stands in the centre of the former municipal square – today, the trees of this central ‘island’ of the square are optically connected with the ‘green belt’ and for this reason the place itself can also be interpreted as a municipal square with the statue at its opening from the Hucisko side.

Information about the author/authors: Tadeusz Barącz of the Odrowąż coat of arms (b. 24 March 1849 in Lviv, d. 13 March 1905 also in Lviv) was a sculptor, medallist, author of numerous portrait sculptures and monuments.
